Mountain Biking | San Luis Obispo County
I have always loved riding on 2 wheels. The freedom to get on a bike and go places with just the power of my legs was liberating. I remember riding with my friends all of Fisher’s Island in the summers, free to explore the natural beauty of the forests, beaches, and coves. There was a band of BMX biker kids in my neighborhood and we would ride our converted Schwinns all over the trails in the woods behind our houses. Essentially we were mountain miking before it was even invented. As a teenager, my friends had mopeds and I would draft behind them riding all over town at 23 miles an hour just to get to the next hang out, party or to go waterskiing. At the time, I didn’t know anything about hardcore cycling, racing or the nascent Mountain world of mountain biking.
Then I moved to California to attend UCSB and I saw all these kids riding around on mountain bikes. I grabbed an old Schwinn Varsity frame, but cruiser handlebars on it with a mountain bike fork and knobby tires. I chased my new friends all over the trails on that single gear, coaster brake powered, lead sled. While they carefully negotiated difficult descents and used granny gears to climb steep single track, I would skid sideways down the ravines, shoulder my bike on the steeps and climb on my hands and knees and do whatever I had to do to keep up.
Needless to say, I soon found a way to get a real mountain bike and start doing longer rides deep into the Santa Barbara backcountry. Being able to cover so much ground in the wilderness in so little time, get the adrenaline rush of fast descents, and have a kickass workout all in one activity. To this day, I love the ability to lose myself in the outdoors on a mountain bike with good friends.
